I have done sketches but have been creating books both cloth and paper. I also have crocheted about 7 shawls-some for myself and some for gifts. But back to dolls. I did make one for the 2022 Senior Art Show. She is a pirate with a pet fox Vixen who guards treasure. I was inspired by a silk chiffon skirt and other clothes for recycle. I also created a fox mask for her but only gave her an eyepatch to wear for the show. She took second in her category.

Vixen guarding Treasure

Here she is with her fox mask too.

I also planned on creating a. “Mate” for her. There is a size limitation and her current hat put her over the limit so I made her a new one-a boater and added a pair of goggles. The goggles are made from wire and die cut mini gears all covered with Metal tape then colored with alcohol inks and embellished with tiny metal wings. I also placed her on a larger base because I want to add a gate sign and a low chain and barrier around 3 sides of the base. Think the sign will say Gate 9 1/2! Stay tuned!

She won first place in the Professional Sculpture category and got an Honorable Mention in the State Show.

This year I entered "The Game's Afoot" in the County show and she won 1st place. Judging for the State show is next Month. I will try to post a page with the goggle directions for anyone interested!
Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16576492901252878910noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176666953000731167.post-29105451739689308952021-10-11T08:07:00.001-07:002021-10-11T08:11:13.968-07:00It has been too long....

I can't believe it has been over a year since my last post! I have been busy despite the pandemic and have created a few dolls in celebration of a few holidays. The first one is the Keeper of Kind Hearts inspired by Valentines day. I originally sketched the design a few years ago, 2015 for the Hoffman Challenge but went in a totally different direction. Her face is a cloth on cloth reuse of a reject head. I wanted her to look old but sweet and kindly. Gave her a gold front tooth too!.

Her apron is filled with hearts left in her keeping. I have a client who was very interested in Waiting for the Train but I am not ready to sell her yet and I don't duplicate dolls, so I came up with another Steampunk design influenced by Sherlock Holmse. To my surprise, she loves all things Sherlock!

Pics of her completed.
The red trim is crocheted from rayon thread salvaged from a Leather dress and Jacket I purchased at a Thrift Shop. Her Magnifying glass is layers of paper cut out on my Cricut that I laminated together then added a lens cut from a piece of packing plastic. Her Parasol does not open, but her books do! The hat, cape, and belt are removable. I made the hatbox below to ship the hat so it didn't get crushed. Her necklace is a cameo from an earring. Her face is cloth over clay over cloth. The arm bands are satin ribbon with tiny brass buckles. Her Belt is silk as is her purse. Keys other charms hang from her belt. The tag on her carpet bag-made from upholstery samples-has her address. Surprisingly she lives in the same building as Sherlock but a different apartment. All the stripes on her overskirt match. The pleated ruffle is the same fabric. Her Corset is a paisley brocade with tiny brass button trim.
I wanted to give her a skeptical look as she peered through her Magnifying Glass with her one eyebrow raised. He is wearing a Deerstalker cap made from the same homespun as her cape. It is completely lined and the flaps can also tie under the chin. Her hair is a piece of Lambskin that I curled then pulled the hair back and contained it in a bun. The bun is enclosed in a crocheted snood from the red rayon thread. Above is a closeup of her carpet Bag. The large book, a Forensics Handbook can be removed and attached to her belt if desired. The small composition note book is also removable though its pages are empty. The parasol is the same silk as her belt and edged in red lace. Her shoes are the same fabric as her ruffled underskirt with buff faux suede spats. They have beads on the side in lieu of buttons and are trimmed in the same crocheted rayon thread.

Since the book was getting very thick, I decided I had enough pages so I finished it. Here are some pics of the finished bound book. Complete directions on how I did it are found on my Book Bindings page. Now on to the next one!
She is seated on a Mushroom, holds a fairy dress on a hanger being admired by a little Fairy Friend who is saying OOOOH! is that mine? about the new dress Colleen is holding. Colleen is wearing her fav outfit - a striped vest, lacy flowey blouse, frayed jeans, over the shoulder bag, lots of funky jewelry and her laceup sandles and ankle bracelets. She is created from my Style of her Own pattern with a cloth over clay over cloth face.
Actually, the book is almost done - don't like one of the pages so re-doing it. Here are some more of the pages and their accompanying tags with the Stories. The only new doll is Colleen which I made for a dear friend. There are 10 dolls total.
This dol, the Lion Queen, l is created using piece parts from some of my other patterns-mainly a reduced version of my bead joint witch, Flying in Style.. Her diamonds are from the quilt show fabric. I also created her chair from twigs and a scrap of pressboard with the help of Apoxy Sculpt. The top of her staff was a parking lot find!
I was inspired by the Movie "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" and an article that appearred in Somerset Studio's as a challange. I decided to use my own dolls for the "children" I haven't settled on a name yet, but it will have friends in the title. Here are the first three pages. Only 6 ore to go!
I have had the idea in my head forever! I had this beautiful fabric I won from Hoffman. It was purple with gold scrolls. I back painted it black to make the gold stand out more and it worked perfectly! I wanted her to look like she was flying, so created a base with a "hovering" broom over a countryside for her to perch on. She is very stylish - 5 different skirts, lots of embellishements and those shoes!!!! She is bead jointed and can be removed from her broomstick and sit anywhere. She is larger than I usually work - 22". Her hair is a deconstructed sweater in the perfect color. The feathers in her hat are from a poor chicken that was scattered in my yard one morning - probably a snack for our elusive fox. More closeups.

BoHo Shawl. Pattern I purchased on Etsy. Not too happy with it. It was a small but very comprehensive exibit with lots of variety in media and execution. I didn't take pics of others' artwork, but did get some of mine. I entered My doll, The Scholar (holding books), and three of my handmade books, the Sun Book, Rust Book 2 and It's a Beautiful Day.
I am participating in a Gallery show and sale in October. I had a doll kicking around in my head and thought she would be perfect for the display. I have finally finished her after tweaking her twice 0 once for her hair and second and finally for her face. I kept looking at her and felt she really wasn't done. She has a really wide ridiculous smile. Finally it hit me - she looks like the sister from another mother of Alfred E. Newman! So her final touches were freckles and a chipped front tooth. NOW she is DONE!
We expect body parts to fall off it any moment she is so rough with it! But so far so good. Here is a closeup of her modified face.
I also decided to make new and different tags for my dolls. I am making them based on my small books (a couple posts ago) with pics of the doll's face in a Cabochon on the front and the doll's story on an accordian fold pull out in lieu of pages in the book.
I finally finished the doll I started while teaching. I added a top hat, rabbit, a white rose partially painted red and of course the caterpillar! I also rearranged the leaves a bit and added a wooden base to make room for the caterpillar.

I need to thank my former college roommate Chrissy for helping name her. I think the name fits.

I also finished the new version of the Red Queen -"I told you Red Roses!" The little card person under her foot was suggested by my friend Diane. I thought it was a bit sadistic and was going to put a white rose but there it is! This is the same doll as ZombiElla but different post and a few changes to the costume - no peplum on the corset. Embroidered curtain sheer for her over skirt and blouse. Her underskirt was a lovely red slinky dress I made about 30 years ago that I have finally realized I will NEVER fit into again! I was going to teach this out in Albuquerque at the Enchanted Doll Conference in July but unfortunately the conference was canceled.
I started this doll as a class sample to shoe how I combined the vintage linens and also demo the cloth over clay over cloth head. It appears since she is dressed in blue she must be Alice. I built her a chair from a plastic jar of sorts. Covered it in some scraps from one of my tree dolls and added a branch from my yard. Leaves are sheer fabrics and others cut from a plastic odd bottle and embossed. She still needs a rabbit, a top hat and maybe a caterpillar.
I sketched out the pages a few days ago after I finished the Fairy Book. The subject of this book will be the Sun and will actually contain words I think. Today I created the pages using a vintage cotton percale pillow case and gelatos. They colors are wonderful and they are drying with interesting textures. I like that I can go back and add spritches of water and the color will move again. Wanted to simulate the sky at different times of the day. Here are the pages. I made some extra because I do that!
I have been making mini books as accessories for my dolls, specifically my latest, The Scholar. I received many inquiries on how to make the book so I have put together a short tutorial. These books are of various sizes. The covers are fabric scraps, the pages cut from one sheet of 9" x 12" construction paper. I further enhanced the books the Scholar is holding with labels, stamps, and stickers.

Here is the brief tutorial:
NOTE: The pics of the covers shown below are for a different size book. The pages for this green book were cut 3" x 2 1/2". Measurements for the covers are 1 5/8" x 2 5/8". The spine is 1/2" x 2 5/8". The cover chipboard for the purple book was cut 1 5/8" x 2 1/8", spine 1/2" x 2 1/8". The chipboard for the covers is abut 1/8" larger than the folded signature.
Cut a piece of end paper the width of the pages and long enough to go from the cover edge to the end of the first page. For the end papers I used printed typing paper I created from scanning Gelli Plate prints. I also used thin mulberry paper. Use a thin paper to avoid bulk so you will not have a problem closing the book. Apply glue to the inside cover and the first page. Carefully set the end paper over the cover leaving a small reveal around the top, bottom and outer edge. Smooth it into the spine and then onto the page.matching the side edges. Trim any excess end paper.

The orange book and the black with stars book are the same size.- 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" finished. The remaining two are also the same size 2 1/2" x 1 3/4" though the green is slightly longer. I designed the books around the size of the pages I could get from a single sheet of construction paper with the least amount of waste. They are perfect for doll accessories!

I also wanted to use a die I have had for a matchbox. I first cut it out in chip board but the material was too thick. Tried a thinner board but still too thick so went to card stock and though it was still a little tight, it worked. I had to re-do some of the folds, but it works. I covered the outer slide with embossed metal tape then added a medallion on the front with that lovely pin. I also added some rhinestone chain from a flea market find necklace. The top piece of the box is a metal filagree medallion I folded in half and the bottom embellishment was from thrift store find and it included the chain! Perfect. Decided to put a little fold out album inside with pics of the grands. Now that it is done - NO WAY will I do this as a class! took too much time, too fussy and a bit frustrating with the die! But overall, pleased with the final results.
(the first was the base of Dorothy!) First pic is the pages cut out and the second is the second set of pages I have finished. I am trying to work within the seasons for the dress design and the adjacent flowers.
The secons set of pages are Spring and have Tulips, Daffodils, Hyacinth, and Lily of the Valley. All the lace is hand dyed or painted from my collection. I recut these pages from some of the Eco Fabric with the Blueberries. Subtle color in the background. The leaves in all the pages are cut from sheer fabrics, dyed or painted with watercolor paints, then stitched down
I have lots of high count 100% cotton fabric and some old 600 count cotton sateen sheets that would be great to experiment on. I did two trials. Gathered leaves from my backyard and added a few blueberries and sprinkled of tumeric and cayenne. Here are the results. Left is with Blueberries on Southern Belle natural cotton, second is with the tumeric, cayenne and no berries but leaves dipped in iron water, fabric a pale yellow green 600 ct egyptian sheet. Fabric soaked in soda ash with an iron blanket on both.
